A little visit

Mum and I had just been saying that we haven't seen any butterflies this year, when three of these wee fellas came by to visit:

We weren't sure what type they were, so I fetched a chart to check. Soon, one of our visitors took an interest in it;

After a while we left the chart on the ground to see where they would land;

They were Red Admirals, by the way, and yes, they did sit on their own portrait for a while! Maybe they were looking for girlfriends :)

This went on for a good half hour, then they all flew off. We haven't seen any others since. Strange! But beautiful, magical....

Hi Helena! I just saw your update note at Facebook and came over to read your blog post!

I haven't seen many butterflies around Little Rock for several years either. At the last house we lived at in Oldbrook, Milton Keynes before we had to move back to the US, I saw a Red Admiral in the back garden. Of course I didn't know what it was at the time and it took me a bit of searching to find it's identity. I was so struck by how beautiful it was!

We havn't seen many butterflies so far this year either Helena. I think it's probably because it's been so wet and cold for so long. The butterfly in your photo looks as though it may have been one of last years that had overwintered but it must be very late waking up if it is. Red Admirals are beautiful, aren't they and how wonderful that it landed so close to you.

Those are beautiful.. Glad you got to see at least three! .WE saw lots of butterflies in early spring. When it was cool enough to walk in the park every day they would almost fly into us! There were several different ones and we really loved seeing them/

We have Red Admirals here in Massachusetts. It's one of the popular ones for school kids to raise from caterpillars.

That's lovely! I saw my first butterfly of the year today too, but it was against the sun so all I could make out was a dark shape, but it was good to know there are a few out.

Butterflies are a bit of a rarity this summer. I think they don't like the rain. I saw a good moff this morning though, an' plenty of bees.
