Oh. My. God.

See this fella? A common black ground beetle. Just short of an inch long. Did you know that if you put this wee fella's name into google-uk you get 290,000 hits? (I mean "common black ground beetle", OK? You don't need to know he's an Alan or Keith or anything...) So they are really interesting little fellas, right? And apparently they have fans.

But what I want to know is, what I really want to know is, why have I found 4 of them in my house this week? Or to put it a tad less subtley: "OH MY GOD! WE MUST HAVE A NEST! WHERE'S THE NEST? WHERE IS IT? HOW MANY ARE THERE? 5? dozens? HUNDREDS? WHAT WAS THAT? DID YOU SEE SOMETHING? CAN WE MOVE?"

Eeww, it's that whole thing about when the outside moves inside and takes up residence. Woodlice in the house freak me out, particularly when I find them upstairs, how did they get there, are they eating away at the beams in the roof?

Chalky,

Make that 5- caught one on an upstairs windowsill last night!

Brian,

I don't know- which one was biggest, ugliest and fattest?

Someone told me that they lay up to five thousand eggs every four months.
Just kidding. It's only three thousand.

oooh, yesterday my youngest went to fetch her bucket and spade from the garden, for the beach. She tipped it up in the sitting room, and several dozen WOOD LICE streamed out, running for cover. Have you any idea how fast these guys move?? I saw most of them disappear under various parts of furniture. I really don't like sitting in here tonight.. (shudder)

Catmoves,
thanks for that!

Chewy,
I asked Dilly to see to them when we were only up to 2. I think now she's farming them.

Shrinky,
I did a similar thing when I brought in a wooden bird feeder to inspect, to find out why the birds weren't using it- tipped it over and millions of EARWIGS fell out. Even after washing the thing they still came out. ITCHY ITCHY ITCHY! They never used to bother me, but after seeing a plague of them together, I can't stand them now. We were getting them indoors for about a year after that.

Deli,
I'm sure sci-fi writers just look at bugs under magnifying glasses for inspiration. I mean just look at that thing on Alien 2- BUG!

David,
Can't do this one daily, but nice to have it pootling along. Thanks!
