On hols

The Crescent, Buxton. For more info on this town, click here.

We're off to Buxton for a wee while now. Buxton is in Derbyshire, and is about 1300ft above sea level. I've been told that locals say "It's one overcoat cooler up there". Ahuh.

August has been weird in England anyway- scorching hot one minute and gale-force winds and torrential rain the next. Hey, that sounds like rainforest conditions! That'll explain why my usually-foot-high-by-now chrysanthemums are nearly up to my waist. And why the gravel I weeded the other month is now gradually disappearing again.

So it sounds like our break might be similar to the one we took in Norfolk two summers ago- we got soaked at Pensthorpe Reserve and froze in wet fleece jackets, squinting against the rain whilst trying to photograph some strange looking geese. Can't remember what type now. But my other half was very excited about them at the time.

Hmm. Well it's nearly 4am and I forgot to go to bed again. Better give it a try. I have jumpers to pack in the morning!

By the way, there's a Gilbert And Sullivan festival on up there this week, and rumour has it that the cast usually stays at the same hotel we're going to. I wonder what the breakfasts will be like....

Hey, that sounds like a great chance for a sing-along! My school drama department alternated the annual school play - every other year was a G&S operetta. Loved them!
Have a great holiday, and don't get too wet.

I hope you have a great time whatever the weather is like :-)

I hope the weather is good for you. Packing those jumpers is a good idea. A bit like me taking an umbrella out with me stops it from raining. (It does you know!)

All depends on the weather!

Oh how great that you get to go on holiday for a bit! I hope you have an absolutely fabulous time Helena. :) If it does rain I hope it's just a nice gentle shower and then the sun comes back out.

Buxton is special to me as it is where my husband and I spent some courting time. I was in college at Ashford near Bakewell and he was at Cliff College in Calver, not too far from there.

Have a great and restful vacation.

Blue.... yup, it got a bit windy! And we got soaked through on one of the days. It was too fierce for the umbrella sometimes. We were in the town when it was worst so we ducked in under a covered walkway till it passed. Problem was, it would stop for 10 minutes, then start again- and it was like that for 3 days or so.

Hey ho!

dragonstar,

G & S was the first opera I listened to- my dad had a "best of" tape and I played it to death in my early teens! It was nice to hear it again. So uplifting. Wonderful voices, made me soar inside :^)

Cherrypie,

it took me a little while to settle. I'm always like that when I go away- at first I want to be home, my own bed and my own tea. Then I settle and I want to stay there!

Lynda,

it was good to get advice on what to pack before we went from so many people! I took more summery stuff as well, but never wore it. I could have done with a bigger jumper or my lighter winter coat- I did look at them when I was packing but couldn't believe I would need them!

Denise,

It was great to hear your voice!!!!
And Bob loved your welcome home poem. Disappointing not to meet up but we were very worried about you travelling on a bike in all that rain. And Bob was particularly worried because he thought the goose would be flying alongside you.

Bumblevee,

I loaded up my photo's from my camera onto my computer and it said I had over 280!!!! Plus my partner took some on his camera too! Good Lord!!!

Mrs Mac said...

Sally,

Erm.... no, I think my stay in Norfolk still rates top in my heart when it comes to places we've explored! I really do want to go back to Norfolk!

Lorianna,

Try torrential downpours with 10 minute breaks now and then! LOL! It was still good though. And the opera was a highlight, it really lifted me!

Mrs Mac said...

Sandy,

I loved the G & S! I was worried because opera really isn't my partner's thing (try avant garde jazz, that's nearer the mark). But he enjoyed it too! And Bob was elated that the cast included a Bear!

:^)

Leslie,

We had one day where it was warm and sunny for most of the afternoon- just long enough to explore a village called Eyam that I really wanted to see because of its history.
Otherwise we saw the countryside from our car and a few tea shops!!

San,

the breakfasts were enormous and yummy! And you didn't have to wait long for them. YUm yum yum. Filled me up till mid afternoon!

Mrs Mac said...

Ms Creek,

oh whereas you just have boring stuff like the Grand Canyon and the Space Shuttle....

LOL!!

Chrisj,

Oh! We went to Bakewell! We had a "genuine Bakewell pudding" and brought one home, to take to my mum's, if it lasts that long :^)
